If I were to ever kidnap a dog, it would be this one …

I don’t have a dog. I’ve wanted one for as long as I can remember,I don’t have a dog. I’ve wanted one for as long as I can remember, and I won’t be a dog owner for some time — our apartment needs to suddenly get bigger, or my husband and I need to start being home more. One day, it’ll happen, sooner rather than later, I hope.

For now, I have wonderful friends with dogs, and I get to pretend they’re my own! Last week, my co-author Sue Chipperton came to N.Y.C. to promote our book, A Famous Dog’s Life, on the Today Show. We had a blast at the taping, then out for a celebratory lunch at Rosa Mexicano (best margaritas and made-at-your-table guacamole in the city). But for me, it was just as much fun to hang with the dogs.

For the TV segment, Sue brought Echo, a gorgeous Border Collie—and former shelter dog. Echo and I enjoyed a lovely walk around Sue’s hotel in the 30s on the west side (though my canine buddy could not find a suitable bathroom spot in her new concrete surroundings).

“She’ll be good for you,” Sue told me. “She just may pull you a bit … sometimes she thinks she sees someone she knows.”

How stinkin’ cute is that?

“Well, naturally,” I replied. “She is famous after all.”

It took me a while to realize where I recognized Echo from … she’s got quite a resume of commercials, including this one, with her signature head-cock move:

Then, there’s Moonie. I am pretty much in love with Moonie. He played Bruiser in the Legally Blonde films and even now, at 12, he’s the most eager little worker I’ve ever met. He loves to rub his body against you like a cat, too. And he’s a big fan of carpeting, eager to army-crawl across it on his little belly whenever possible.

Check him out winning over Kathie Lee and Hoda, above.

And a couple more photos of the little four-legged stars who I got to hang out with (and love on!) all day.

See that camera-ready look on Echo’s face? That’s because Sue—who you can see in the mirror—is holding a treat next to the camera. Ah, the magic of movies!
